One of the most important aspects of pediatric dental care is preventive dentistry. At Young Smiles, our friendly team works hard to help children learn to take care of their teeth at home, and we offer a variety of preventive treatments to help protect their teeth and keep their mouths and smiles healthy.
Allows kids to get better nutrition:
Without preventive oral care, tooth decay and cavities can cause toothaches and severe pain. These pains can make eating certain foods more difficult. Not only will this stop your child from enjoying their favorite foods, but it can also lead to nutrient deficiency if they are not able to pleasantly eat different foods.
Early Dental Hygiene is Linked to Normal Speech Development:
Speech development hinges on when teeth grow and form. Proper oral care promotes healthy tooth growth and therefore helps your child develop at a normal pace. It is recommended that you visit a dentist as soon as the first tooth appears.
We will provide your child with the best possible care. As parents, we know you have concerns about procedures and materials used in modern dentistry, and we are more than happy to provide you with the best information so you can make the right decision for your child.
All of our treatments and materials are supported by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Dental Association. The following is a list of the routine care we offer our
young patients:
Nitrous Oxide (N20)
Commonly referred to as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is a blend of two gases; oxygen and nitrous oxide. It is a safe, mild, non-allergenic sedation. Quick acting, nitrous oxide is administered through a “nose” that fits over your child’s nose and functions as they breathe normally. They are fully awake while breathing the nitrous oxide. At the end of treatment, we have your child breathe 100% oxygen, and the gases are out of their system before they leave our office.
General Anesthesia (I.V. Sedation)
When oral conscious sedation would not work well, we may recommend general anesthesia, also known as I.V. Sedation. This is an option if your child is extremely apprehensive, very young, or has special needs. It is administered in our office by a trained general anesthesiologist that comes to our office approximately once a month, specifically to do I.V. sedation.
Your child is constantly monitored by the anesthesiologist, as well as a trained dental assistant, and the dentist performing the treatment. Similar to oral sedation, your child doesn’t eat or drink anything after midnight the night before treatment, then after treatment, it is a relaxing day at home. It’s important to follow the pre and post-treatment instructions given to you by the dentist and treatment coordinator.
